Anchor pieces vs. flexible swaps: how we think about it
Why some pieces in a designed room can't be swapped without changing the room — and why we're upfront about it.
Most 'shop the room' tools pretend every item is interchangeable. They aren't. Some pieces define the room's design DNA, and swapping them produces a different room — not a cheaper version of the same one. We label these pieces explicitly.
What makes a piece an anchor
An anchor piece sets a tone the rest of the room is keyed to. In the Neutral Nursery, the crib's wood finish defines the warmth of the entire room. Swap it for a painted spindle crib and the dresser, the art frames, and the glider feet stop matching. You haven't saved $750. You've changed the design.
What makes a piece a flexible swap
Flexible items can vary across a wide price range without disturbing the design. Lamps, rugs, and wall art are the usual flexible categories — same shape, same color family, three different price points, three roughly equivalent rooms.
The honest position
We mark anchor pieces with a diamond. Their swap range is narrow on purpose. If you want a fundamentally different anchor, pick a different room. This is the opposite of how Wayfair and Pinterest work, and we think it's a better answer for people who care about the room actually working.
